The value of sunglasses

Sunglasses are important and very fashionable forms of eye protectors. In recent years this protective role has become much enhanced due to our greatly increased exposure to the sun via foreign holidays, sport and leisure activities and a significant reduction of the Ultraviolet (U/V) ray, filtering capacity of the ozone layer.

Whilst many of us are aware that excessive exposure to the sun gives an increased risk of skin cancer we are less aware that it will cause more, and an earlier onset of, cataracts and the even more serious, Age Related Macula Degeneration.

Risk reduction

Some people are at particular risk due to a general reduction in the U/V filtering ability of certain structures in the eye e.g. the elderly and those who have already had cataracts removed.

Whilst children have naturally greater absorption properties in their eyes for U/V, they also will obviously be living for longer and also spend more time outside.

Sunglasses are very important for activities where glare is a problem, e.g. driving, skiing, sailing, flying.
